Preparing for your interview

For some of our courses we interview applicants before we make an offer. This is usually because successfully completing the course qualifies you to enter a profession, such as nursing, social work or teaching.

The interview helps us assess your suitability for the course and is an important part of our approach to safer recruitment.  We want to understand your motivations for joining your chosen profession and helps make sure we select the right people to care and support vulnerable children and adults.

An interview is also a chance for you to get to know us, and for you to find out more about the course. It isn't designed to catch you out, we can support you in preparing for your interview.

Before your interview

Our step-by-step list of things to do when we invite you to interview.

[Expand all]

  • Activate your university account straight away so you don't miss your interview invitation.

We send interview invitations and other communications through Student View, our applicant portal. We email you login details when you apply to Brighton. Find out how to activate your account.

  • When we invite you to interview, we’ll email you to ask you to check your messages in Student View. Log in and choose an interview date.

If none of the dates work for you, message us through Student View and we’ll try to find another time.

  • If you're disabled, neurodivergent or have a health condition, we can make adjustments to your interview or other admissions task. That could be:

    • extra time for a written task
    • questions shown in writing as well as spoken
    • breaks between questions, or a quiet space if you’re interviewing on campus
    • a chaperone.

Tell us when you book, or message us through Student View before your interview. You don’t have to share more personal information than you want to.

  • For some courses we may also ask you to send documents, complete a short task or fill in a declaration before your interview. We’ll tell you what is needed and by when.

    • Think about why you want to study the course and join the profession, and examples from your life that show it. These can come from school, work, volunteering, caring or hobbies.
    • Find out which professional body accredits your course on our course finder, and take a look at their web page.
    • Re-read your personal statement.
    • Make a note of any questions you’d like to ask us.

    • Find a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted.
    • Join a few minutes early. You’ll wait in a virtual lobby until we let you in.
    • Have photo ID ready, such as your passport, driving licence, or school or college ID card.
    • You can have water, and a pen and paper for notes and questions.
  • If your interview is on campus, your invitation will tell you where to go and who will meet you. Find out about our campuses in Brighton.

If you can’t attend an online or in-person interview, let us know as soon as you can and we'll try to offer another date.

After your interview

We'll let you know the outcome. If you're successful, you'll receive an offer through UCAS. Offers for these courses usually include non-academic conditions, such as a DBS check and Occupational Health check. Your course's entry requirements info tab explains which apply.
