Meet our students
Martha Mae Hayes-Watkins
“What got me to choose photography was my love for experimentation and fascination around the methods of creating a photograph.
“My favourite part of my studies are the available facilities and how supportive the tutors are. From the technician team to the course leader, everyone is so supportive of my ideas and projects I want to work on.
“Because of this, I have been able to experiment with different printing methods and ways to express a narrative, and it has helped shaped the artist I am today.
“Brighton to me has turned into a bubble of support. I feel safe in this town and I know people left, right and centre!
“It is a space full of inspiration and new people that has helped me form brilliant connections in the student and artist world.“

Charlotte Bull
“My favourite part of my studies is simply having the opportunity to expand my skill set in something I love. Having access to a wide range of photographic equipment, most of which I would never have had the chance to use, meant I was able to try out and develop many different skills sets, refining who I am as a photographer and gaining skills that are useful in commercial work.
“Both Martin Seeds and Holly Birtles have been inspiring tutors. They both pushed me to create amazing work and would go out of their way to advise me and other students.
“They both made sure that there were interesting workshops arranged outside of timetabled classes, as well as many trips to galleries and exhibitions. Being able to connect with my tutors is something I have highly valued while studying in here.
“Advice I would give my 17-year-old self is to take every opportunity the course offers; go on all the trips, participate in all the workshops and learn as much as possible. Make lots of work that I want to make, not what I think others expect me to make. And enjoy yourself!“

Leah Jones
“I wanted a course that gave me the freedom to experiment and really think about what photography means, beyond just taking pictures. Brighton offered a great mix of practical skills and theory, which helped me push my ideas further.
“I was also drawn to the creative atmosphere of the city itself as it felt like a place where I could explore and grow.
“One of the best parts has been working with other creatives. Being surrounded by people from different backgrounds and experiences really helped me refine my ideas and approach things in new ways.
“Brighton has been a place of creativity, growth, and figuring things out. It’s where I’ve pushed my work and met an amazing community. And now it’s one of my favourite places.“
