Intro

Our four-year Business Management with Human Resource Management and Placement Year BSc(Hons) follows the same first year as the three-year Business Management with Human Resource Management degree but also gives you the opportunity to graduate with a year’s paid work experience in industry.

You will address core business topics in addition to organisational behaviour, managing and developing people and cross-cultural working. Human resource management options include employee recruitment, leadership, employee relations and organisational change. 

All of our business degrees share the same first year, offering you the flexibility to change your final degree title. At the end of your first year you can choose to continue with a Business Management with Human Resource Management and Placement Year BSc(Hons), or to choose one of the other specialisms:

  • Business Management with Placement Year BSc(Hons)
  • Business Management with Economics and Placement Year BSc(Hons)
  • Business Management with Finance and Placement Year BSc(Hons)
  • Business Management with Marketing and Placement Year BSc(Hons).

All students can take a year-long, salaried placement working with some of the biggest names in commerce and industry.

Our Business Management with Economics and Placement Year BSc(Hons) programme is ideal for gaining an understanding of the diverse areas of modern business management. It will help you to decide which area of business you would like specialise in, providing you with work experience and valuable connections within the business world, whilst also preparing you to be your own boss.

Learning is delivered through a stimulating mix of seminars, academic and industry lectures, group projects and workshops. You will develop confidence and expertise in analysis, business communication, teamwork, and transferable skills in preparing briefs, plans and reports, presenting, budgeting and evaluation. You will also explore topics including financial markets, business ethics, game theory and behavioural economics.

As you progress, the flexibility of this course allows you to tailor your learning to your interests through optional modules. From your second year you can also choose to specialise in the area of business which interests you most: economics, finance, human resource management or marketing.

During your third year, you can take a year’s salaried placement in industry, giving you the change to apply your learning, gain valuable experience and make professional contacts for your future career.

Business Management with Human Resource Management

Year 1

All our Business Management degrees share the same first year core modules to give you a broad understanding of business principles.

Core modules include aspects of economics, marketing, HR, organisational behaviour and finance, to give you a broad understanding of business principles and practice. 
You can then choose to specialise from year 2.

  • Business Economics

    In this module you will develop your understanding of key economic concepts by applying them to contemporary issues within the world of business and through the application of quantitative techniques. You will also gain an understanding of how political, economic and environmental factors influence the world of business.

  • Principles of Marketing

    This module introduces the role and function of marketing within organisational frameworks. You'll develop an understanding of basic qualitative and quantitative tools available for analysing and interpreting the marketing environment.

  • Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management

    This module will introduce you to a range of concepts, principles and theories that have been adopted within the study of organisational behaviour and human resource management.

    This module will provide you with a grounding for understanding how people are managed and organised in the workplace.

  • Financial Knowledge and Skills for Business

    This module provides you with an introduction to fundamental concepts in the fields of financial accounting, management accounting, and finance. You will develop a basic understanding of an organisation’s financial position and performance through the application of appropriate analytical tools and procedures.

  • Enterprise Project and Skills

    I this module you will create a business plan, a project plan and a marketing plan that include a digital presence.

    You'll integrate and apply skills and learning from other year one modules using project management skills to deliver a practical and applied business project, and will need to demonstrate a clear understanding of market dynamics, financial structures and HRM employment strategies.

    The module is underpinned with a strong skills component which develops quantitative, research, project, academic, team working, personal development and business skills.

  • Managing Systems and Operations

    This module will introduce you to the use of digital technologies and operations management in business.

    The module will highlight how managers use digital technologies to measure and improve operations and systems performance, and will provide an understanding of the processes and the methods to improve them in both service-oriented and manufacturing-sector organisations. A range of contemporary issues, innovation and future trends in Information Systems (IS) and operations management will be showcased

Placement year

The paid work placement year is a vital part of the course. It gives you the chance to apply your learning to real-life situations and challenges, to meet and network with potential employers, and have opportunities to get real work experience before you graduate – something that employers value highly.

On your placement, you will complete a business project. This project contributes to your degree and, depending on the topic you choose, could provide valuable insight for your placement employer.

Placement companies include American Express, BMW, Bosch, Channel 4, Disney, Electronic Arts, Hewlett Packard, Home Office, IBM, Ipsos Mori, ITV, lastminute.com, Microsoft and Rolls Royce Motor Cars.

Course leader

Dr Celestine Ike Nwachukwu

Celestine is a senior lecturer and course leader on both this course and our Business Management with Human Resource Management BSc(Hons).

He's actively engaged with teaching on this course and is also involved in a range of research projects in international human resource management (HRM) and strategic HRM.

Celestine teaches the following modules on the undergraduate degree: Managing and Developing People, Organisational Behaviour and HRM, Working Across Cultures and International HRM. He also teaches Research Methods to our postgraduate students, Leadership with Ethics to our Master of Business Administration (MBA) students, and Managing Talent, Reward and Performance to postgraduate HRM students.

All students successfully completing a four-year Business Management route, and who have passed the qualifying modules, will have completed the study required for the Chartered Management Institute’s Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership. 

You can apply for the certificate from the CMI at the current cost with no requirement to sit their assessment.

During the second year module, Managing Systems, students gain practical experience working as a team to manage a business scenario by using SAP’s Enterprise Resource Planning system, which is considered industry-standard software.

Flexible admissions

When you apply to Brighton we want to hear about who you are. Entry requirements

A-levels or BTEC
Entry requirements are in the range of A-level BBB–BCC (120–104 UCAS Tariff points), or BTEC Extended Diploma DMM–MMM. Our conditional offers typically fall within this range.

International Baccalaureate
26 points, with three subjects at Higher level.

Access to HE Diploma
Pass with 60 credits overall. At least 45 credits at level 3, with 24 credits at merit.

Foundation degree/HND
May enable you to start the course in year 2. Relevant subjects required. HNC may also count towards direct entry.

Studied before or got relevant experience?
A qualification, HE credits or relevant experience may count towards your course at Brighton, and could mean that you do not have to take some elements of the course or can start in year 2 or 3. 

English language requirements
IELTS 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each element. Find out more about the other English qualifications that we accept.

Don’t meet these entry requirements?
Our Business Management BSc(Hons) with integrated foundation year provides an extra year of study at foundation level if you do not have the academic qualifications or experience needed for entry to this course.

Successful completion of the foundation year enables you to progress onto year 1 of this degree.

Course fees

UK (full-time) 9,250 GBP

International (full-time) 14,300 GBP

If you choose to take the professional placement (sandwich) year offered on this course you will pay a reduced fee during this year. Our fee for the professional placement year is £1,410 for UK students and £2,180 for international students. This fee may be subject to small increases, in line with inflation.

What's included

You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees. A summary of the costs that you may be expected to pay, and what is included, while studying a course in the School of Business and Law in the 2022–23 academic year are listed here.

  • Students who choose to take an optional placement will have travel and living expenses. The cost of this depends on where and how long your placement is.
  • Textbooks are available from the university library (many as e-books) but you may wish to budget up to £200 to buy your own copies.
  • For the International Tourism Management BSc, International Tourism Management with Marketing BSc, International Event Management BSc, and International Event Management with Marketing BSc, field trips are an optional activity, but we do strongly advise participation as they contribute to the overall experience of studying this degree. The cost for field trips is not included in the tuition fee and must be paid for by students, however please be assured we do try to keep field trip costs to a minimum and don't anticipate the total cost of a few field trips each year to exceed £30. If you would struggle to meet this cost, there is a hardship fund that you may be able to access.

The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2023–24.

Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and are subject to an annual increase of no more than 5% or RPI (whichever is the greater). The annual increase for UK students, who are subject to regulated fees, will increase no more than the statutory maximum fee.

The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full-time or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take.

Moulsecoomb campus

Two miles north of Brighton seafront, Moulsecoomb is our largest campus and student village. Over the last four years Moulsecoomb has undergone a major transformation, planned with accessibility, inclusivity and sustainability in mind.

Over 900 students live here in our halls, Moulsecoomb Place and the new Mithras halls – Brunswick, Goldstone, Hanover, Preston and Regency.

On campus you’ll find professional-standard facilities and learning resources for all of our subjects and a brand new academic building Elm House, alongside the library, student centre, fitness facilities and the Students’ Union.

Moulsecoomb has easy access to buses and trains and to all the exciting things happening in our home city.

We have halls of residence across Brighton in the city centre, Moulsecoomb, Varley Park and Falmer.

  • Moulsecoomb campus is linked to Mithras halls and Varley Park. All halls are self-catered.
  • Varley Park offers a mix of rooms. It is around two miles from Moulsecoomb campus and four miles from the city centre. Public transport in the city is excellent, and there’s a shuttle bus between our Brighton campuses during term time.

About Brighton

All of our full-time undergraduate courses involve work-based learning - this could be through placements, live briefs and guest lectures. Many of these opportunities are provided by local businesses and organisations.

It's only 50 minutes by train from Brighton to central London and less than 40 minutes to Eastbourne. There are also daily direct trains to Bristol, Bedford, Cambridge, Gatwick Airport, Portsmouth and Southampton.

Frank Meacey is a third-year student. After studying the core economics module in his first year, he discovered an interest in financial foreign exchange, leading him to choose the Business Management with Economics pathway. Frank also went on to take a placement at World First Foreign Exchange in Westminster, London, allowing him to explore whether this could be a career choice for him, and to gain some practical transferable skills whilst on placement. Frank was also awarded the Alumni & Friends Award at our 2018 Excellence Awards for his second-year work.
