Intro

Our accredited Logistics and Supply Chain Management MSc will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of how businesses operate in the post-COVID world.

The pandemic has affected the global supply chain sector significantly - consumer behaviour has changed worldwide and the exponential growth of e-commerce means there is now an increasing need for logistics and supply chain experts.

Designed with a research-strong academic team and industry experts, recent developments are at the core of this course to provide you with the specialist knowledge and skills that you need for a career in supply chain management. This includes topics such as digital supply chain, international logistics, operations management, supply chain analytics, enterprise systems and strategic purchasing.

At Brighton we also emphasise sustainability. Given the unexpected positive environmental effect of the pandemic, and the political changes from BREXIT and the recent US election, sustainability will continue to rise in organisations’ strategic agendas as the pandemic recedes.

Full-time students also have the option to add work experience to their masters through a year’s paid placement in industry. 

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply. The University of Brighton is also a member of the SAP University Alliances Programme – you will gain experience of using SAP software, one of the world's most widely used enterprise resource planning systems.

Course content

Course structure

This course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Case studies, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for a career in the supply chain. 

Core modules will give you practical knowledge in a variety of logistics and supply areas as well as key business skills such as financial analysis. In term 3 you will be able to tailor your course through a choice of a final project or work placement.

Teaching takes place over three terms, from late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.  

At the end of the course, you have a choice between a final year project or a work experience-based report. These are completed after teaching finishes in the summer.

Practical learning 

You will have the opportunity to visit industry partners, learning directly from them about their manufacturing, logistics and distribution activities and challenges. Previous visits have included the Port of Southampton, Liz Earle (natural beauty products), the Shepherd Neame brewery, TEVA Pharmaceuticals and the Jaguar automobile assembly plant.

Practical experience is essential in acquiring your chartered membership through CIPS and CILT. As part of your programme you have the opportunity to complete a six-month paid work placement, contributing to your progression towards CMILT and MCIPS status.

This course is also available as full-time over two years which includes a paid placement year, providing you up to 12 months experience towards your chartered membership.

Term 1

  • International Logistics and Finance
    This module is combination of international logistics and financial and managerial accounting. The module explores international logistics and decisions concerning facilities location, port of loading, port of discharge, and the transportation modes employed within the supply chain. Contextual factors include international trade and infrastructure development, as well as the microeconomic forces affecting markets for logistics services.

    The module also introduces you to core logistics concepts and terminology and involves a visit to a port. The financial accounting element of this module shows how accounting data is compiled and presented to external users including shareholders and investors. The managerial accounting component will explore accounting as a tool for decision making, planning and control within the organisation.
  • Supply Chain Analytics
    This module provides you with the tools, techniques and methodologies that you will use in the career in supply chain management. An introduction to supply chain analytics, an understanding of demand forecasting, computer simulation and algorithmic approaches to supply chain problems, including warehouse layout and vehicle routing. It is largely delivered in the computer laboratories and includes practice in using simulation software.
  • Operations Management for Logistics
    This module builds an in-depth knowledge of operations management in manufacturing and distribution. It focuses on key techniques in process and layout design, inventory control, capacity management, quality management and 6 sigma, operations improvement and lean operations.

Term 2

  • Enterprise Systems and E-procurement
    This module examines how and why enterprise systems such as SAP and Oracle are used by organisations, and explores the impact of enterprise technologies. It is delivered in the computer laboratories and includes exposure to a SAP enterprise systems environment. This module also examines current developments in e-procurement and develops an understanding of the effects of e-procurement on business and other organisations.
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management
    This module provides a broad, strategic view of supply chain management, building on the concepts introduced during the first term. It is delivered through workshops, lectures and class exercises. You will explore the practical application of logistical concepts and techniques through case studies and an industrial visit to a vehicle assembly plant (e.g. Jaguar Land Rover). This module also explores the digitalisation of the supply chain and emerging technologies.
  • Research Methods for Masters Degrees
    Delivered through a series of workshops and activities, this module develops knowledge of business and management research methods. It provides students with the research skills necessary to undertake their project or work placement report.

Term 3

Strategic Purchasing
This module explores the principles and practices of purchasing in a wider global context. It examines the potential of strategic purchasing to increase profitability through quality-driven approaches to sourcing, buyer-supplier relationships and supply chain management.

Learning support 

Our supportive learning environment includes an induction programme and specialist diagnostic tools to assess your learning strengths and needs. You will also be assigned an academic supervisor to support you in your project work. We also provide free language and support services throughout for international students. 

Online learning tools and libraries also ensure academic journals, e-books, business articles and other resources are available to your 24/7, both for use at the university and at home.

Placements year 

To further increase your employability and international experience we offer full-time students starting in September the opportunity to take a placement year. This means that your course will take two years, but you’ll be graduating with work experience.

The year on placement in a role related to your course will allow you to put all that you have learned on your masters into practice, enhancing your career opportunities and giving you practical experience in your area of expertise.

During your placement you will also complete a business project. This project is assessed as part of your masters and, depending on the topic that is agreed between you and your employer, could also provide a valuable piece of insight for your placement employer.

Our placement partners include BMW, Bosch, Deloitte, Disney, Hewlett Packard, HSBC, IBM, Ipsos Mori, L’Oréal, Nike, Panasonic, PwC, Renault and Warner Brothers.

Work placements are optional, and you are responsible for arranging your placement with support from our dedicated Placements and Employability team.

We are now offering a two-year international study visa route to support applications for this course.

Dr Kamila Walters, course leader 

Kamila has an extensive experience gained during over 10 years working within the operations, planning, supply chain and finance (business intelligence) departments for a company within the FMCG sector. She holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Lodz (Poland). She is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) following the completion of the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCert).

Her interests are focused on the exploration of modern local and global integrated supply chain management with an emphasis placed on issues related to sustainability, ethical business practices and supply chain analytics. She is interested in the process of maintaining and growth of effective and efficient supply chains through IT tools, Big Data analytics and business processes.

Hamid has an extensive experience as a supply chain manager in different industries, and holds a PhD in Management from the University of Kent. He is a fellow in the Higher Education Academy (HEA) following his completion of Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE), and has produced many research publications in the area of supply chain management and strategy management.

Peter is a member of the International Advisory Committee for the International Symposium on Logistics and a regular speaker at their conference. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. His research and publications are in the area of supply chain improvement. Peter also brings a wealth of commercial expertise from previously having worked in a number of senior business planning and operations roles in Delphi Diesel Systems and BOC.

How this course is delivered

How will my course be taught?
For the academic year that starts in September 2022 we’re planning for all students to be taught face-to-face on campus, enhanced by some online learning.

Students who started their course with us in 2021 are on campus for some face-to-face learning including tutorials, workshops, laboratory classes and studio sessions. They are also taking part in off-campus learning activities such as placements, field trips and study visits. And all of our campus facilities – libraries, learning spaces, restaurants, gyms and more are open.

Like all universities we are following government guidance and we are monitoring the pandemic very closely. Should Public Health advise it we have robust plans in place for additional safety measures to be introduced to enable everyone to continue learning on campus, and, as a last resort, for students to continue their learning remotely.

We will update you regularly on our teaching plans for the next academic year as you progress your application with us.

When does my course start?
The 2022 academic year begins on Monday 26 September 2022. Teaching for most courses starts the following week.

Many education courses, some health science courses including Medicine, and some postgraduate business courses have an earlier start date. Check your offer letter for the start date of your course.

Career prospects 

Supply chain management is a broad term which includes many roles and functional areas. With the increasing move to e-commerce new roles are emerging for logistics and supply chain experts, including analysts with good modelling and forecasting skills. 

Many job advertisements state that it is highly desirable to have SAP enterprise planning experience and/or a professional qualification. This course fulfils both requirements as it is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transportation (CILT) and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS). 

Today's jobs market is highly competitive and a postgraduate degree can command a premium with employers. A survey of destinations six months after graduation – carried out by the Higher Education Careers Services Unit (HECSU) – found that postgraduates were more likely to have found employment and be working in a professional role than those with only a first degree.

This course has strong links to a number of local companies with significant supply chain operations. Industry-based projects provide valuable experience.

This signals your professional credibility to employers, clients and peers. 

CILT accreditation

The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), an active and exciting professional organisation that focuses on transportation and warehousing within the supply chain. CILT run an annual student conference, giving students an opportunity to network with professionals. Graduates with sufficient work experience may apply for MILT status, which – following managerial experience – can be upgraded to chartered membership and prestigious CMILT designation.

Skills development 

Employers are involved throughout the degree programme to ensure we’re helping you to develop the skills they’re looking for. Businesses work with us on guest lectures and placement opportunities. We also work with organisations to develop our course programme. For example, we are working with  SAP, the world’s largest business software company.

During our second year module, Enterprise Systems and E-procurement, students gain practical experience working as a team to manage a business scenario by using SAP’s Enterprise Resource Planning system, which is considered industry-standard software.

Our dedicated Placements and Employability team provide a huge portfolio of employers offering business-related placement opportunities. They support all students find a placement.

Entry requirements

Degree and experience
Normally a good honours degree or equivalent is required, or you should have significant management experience. Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications will be considered. If you are unsure whether you meet the entry requirements then please contact us.

International students who need help meeting the academic entry requirements should contact our International College.

Applicants who hold an HND or Foundation degree equivalent can take our nine-month Business BSc top-up degree.

English language requirements

What's included

You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees. A summary of the costs that you may be expected to pay, and what is included, while studying a course in the School of Business and Law in the 2022–23 academic year are listed here.

  • Students who choose to take an optional placement will have travel and living expenses. The cost of this depends on where and how long your placement is.
  • Some courses include optional field trips for which the school pays – you may incur minimal costs such as for food and drink and should budget up to £15.
  • Textbooks are available from the university library (many as e-books) but you may wish to budget up to £200 to buy your own copies.

The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2022–23.

Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and are subject to an annual increase of no more than 5% or RPI (whichever is the greater). The annual increase for UK students, who are subject to regulated fees, will increase no more than the statutory maximum fee.

The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full-time or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take.

Two miles north of Brighton seafront, Moulsecoomb is our largest campus and student village. Over the last four years Moulsecoomb has undergone a major transformation, planned with accessibility, inclusivity and sustainability in mind.

Over 900 students live here in our halls, Moulsecoomb Place and the new Mithras halls – Brunswick, Goldstone, Hanover, Preston and Regency.

On campus you’ll find professional-standard facilities and learning resources for all of our subjects and a brand new academic building Elm House, alongside the library, student centre, fitness facilities and the Students’ Union.

Moulsecoomb has easy access to buses and trains and to all the exciting things happening in our home city.

We have halls of residence across Brighton in the city centre, Moulsecoomb, Varley Park and Falmer.

  • You'll be prioritised for accommodation in the halls that are linked to your teaching base, subject to availability.
  • Moulsecoomb campus is linked to Moulsecoomb Place, Mithras halls and Varley Park. All halls are self-catered.
    • Varley Park offers a mix of rooms. It is around two miles from Moulsecoomb campus and four miles from the city centre. Public transport in the city is excellent, and there’s a shuttle bus between our Brighton campuses during term time.
    • Moulsecoomb Place halls are all self-catered and are located right on campus.

Altan Isik and Matthew Levett discuss their experience of the Logistics and Supply Chain Management MSc. 

Charlotte Vereecken

After graduating Charlotte spent time working in a Belgium chocolate factory before focusing her career in the supply chain area.

Her dissertation research concentrated on improving the efficiency of the returns process for an online clothing retailer.

Charlotte graduated with a distinction and now works as a Logistics Engineer for Volvo Trucks.

Siby Parackal 

After completing an Electronic and Communications Engineering B.Tech at the Cochin University of Science and Technology and having worked in an electronics manufacturing business, Siby joined the MSc.

As part of his course Siby completed a work placement at Liz Earle (natural beauty products) on the Isle of Wight, where he obtained a full-time position as a Business Analyst.
