Intro

The events sector is one of the most dynamic and exciting business sectors. Our International Event Management degree will equip you with the knowledge, practical skills and experience needed to professionally manage events in a variety of areas.

You’ll benefit from industry guest speakers from companies and organisations that stage events, such as Harley Davidson and the Brighton Centre. Plus field trips to a wide range of event spaces, such as Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studio Tour, Wimbledon, London’s Olympic Park, Tulleys Shocktober Fest, Christmas Festivals, Brighton Dome and ExCeL London. You'll gain practical experience to plan and execute your own event, and the optional placement year is an excellent opportunity to build contacts and gain an advantage in the job market.

As founder members of the Association for Events Management Education (AEME), we have a long-standing association with the field. Our staff have backgrounds in corporate, cultural and sporting events sectors, and understand how events can be used to help cultural urban regeneration. They are involved in a wide range of applied sociological and industry-related research.

In your second year, you have the opportunity to focus your studies further and specialise in marketing by moving to our International Event Management with Marketing BSc(Hons).

Course content

Course structure

If studied full-time, the course will take either three or four years to complete, depending on whether you opt for a placement year. It is designed to cover everything you need for a career in events management.

The style of teaching will differ according to module, but it will involve lectures, seminars, group exercises, case studies and student presentations. Your contact hours will gradually reduce over three years as you learn to work more independently.

Although you will be assessed by essays and exams, we will also test your ability to work in teams, give presentations and appraise the work of fellow students. These methods of assessment are intended to reflect real-life management practices.

Making sure that what you learn with us is relevant, up to date and what employers are looking for is our priority, so courses are reviewed and enhanced on an ongoing basis. When you have applied to us, we will inform you of any improvements or innovations to the curriculum through Student View.

Year 1

In year 1, you will study the dynamics and operational aspects of the event industry as well as the principles of business management.

Modules

  • Principles of Marketing

This module introduces the role and function of marketing within organisational frameworks. You'll develop an understanding of basic qualitative and quantitative tools available for analysing and interpreting the marketing environment.

  • Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management

This module will introduce you to a range of concepts, principles and theories that have been adopted within the study of organisational behaviour and human resource management.

This module will provide you with a grounding for understanding how people are managed and organised in the workplace.

  • Event Operations and Project Planning

In this module you will examine the key operational and project issues concerned with planning and managing a range of events. Management tools, operations and project management originated in the manufacturing, construction and IT industries, however, the benefits of a systematic and structured approach have more recently been adopted by organisations within the events industry. The nature of an ‘event’ as a unique product, with an immovable end date lends itself to adopting operations and project management methodologies to its successful organisation.

  • The Event Industry

The rapid growth and development of the events sector in recent years has created a dynamic global industry, which has been built on our need to trade, celebrate, compete, learn, socialize and have fun. In this module you will examine the commercialisation, professionalisation, structure, sectors and legal and risk considerations of the international event industry. You will also discuss the political, socio-cultural, economic and environmental impacts and outcomes of events and identify current trends and issues within the industry.

  • Financial Knowledge and Skills for Business

This module provides you with an introduction to fundamental concepts in the fields of financial accounting, management accounting, and finance. You will develop a basic understanding of an organisation’s financial position and performance through the application of appropriate analytical tools and procedures.

  • Managing Event Organisations

This module develops your knowledge and understanding of the complex nature of events organisations. You will explore the different types of events organisations, their goals and structures, including consumer experience, stakeholders, and a focus on audience development pertinent to the events industry. You will also analyse the challenging business environment in which events organisations operate. You'll enhance your employability skills by gaining insights into management issues specific to events organisations, underpinned by sustainable business practices and organisation theory.

Year 2

In year 2, you will plan and deliver an event using project management skills learned in your first year. You will also gain a fundamental understanding of risk and crisis management and explore the many challenges that event managers face.

You also have the opportunity to focus your studies further and specialise in marketing at this point in your degree by moving to our International Event Management with Marketing BSc(Hons).

Modules

  • Cross-cultural Research and Professional Skills
  • Event Experience Design and Production
  • Event Risk Management Live
  • Staging the Event and Managing Risk
  • Understanding Event Stakeholders: Competing interests, clashes and conflicts
  • International Business Analysis

Placement year

The option of a year's paid work placement in the events sector is highly valued by employers and a vital part of the course, allowing you to work either domestically or abroad for 48 weeks between your second and final years. It gives you the chance to apply your learning to real-life situations and challenges, to meet and network with potential employers, and gain real work experience in this dynamic and complex sector before you graduate.

Upon finishing your event management or marketing related placement, you will complete an elective project that contributes to your degree. This allows you to critically reflect on the event sector and your experiences in the workplace. Further, it may provide strategic insights for your employer. This replaces the Developing Professional Practice core module in final year.

Our dedicated placements and employability team will support you throughout. Read more about our placement years.

What's included

You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees. A summary of the costs that you may be expected to pay, and what is included, while studying a course in the School of Business and Law in the 2022–23 academic year are listed here.

  • Students who choose to take an optional placement will have travel and living expenses. The cost of this depends on where and how long your placement is.

If you would struggle to meet this cost, there is a hardship fund that you may be able to access.

You can chat with our enquiries team if you have a question or need more information. Or check our finance pages for advice about funding and scholarships as well as more information about fees and advice on international and island fee-paying status.

Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and are subject to an annual increase of no more than 5% or RPI (whichever is the greater). The annual increase for UK students, who are subject to regulated fees, will increase no more than the statutory maximum fee.

You can find out more about our fees in the university's student contract and tuition fee policy (pdf).

The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full-time or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take.

Meet our students

Diana Codin

The 'international' element and flexibility of the course were the primary factors that influenced my decision in choosing to study at the University of Brighton, and I am glad that I did!

Throughout my student journey, I had a rich learning experience that enhanced my self-development, helped me develop critical thinking, gain industry knowledge, grow a professional network and enrich my skill-set.

The academic staff were exceptionally well-prepared and supportive on this course. They always did their best to make you feel engaged in learning, whether it was by gamifying the class with competitions and prizes, giving interactive group projects or offering additional guidance. I was also given numerous practical and interactive opportunities, for instance, organising real events as course projects or conducting exploratory field trips.

This blended learning approach has helped me apply the knowledge I had gained during the course and helped to identify what event niche I want to pursue in my career. The course is extremely flexible so it gives you the power to tailor your experience based on your needs. For instance, you can decide if you want to specialise in marketing or if you want to undertake a work placement – you decide what's best for you!

For me, the placement I did at ESL Gaming in Germany propelled my career in the international large scale sporting events and helped me gain a strong foothold in the tech industry, ultimately leading to working on government-funded event projects and global events at Cisco.

Diana Codin

Marcela Oliver

I think the practical activities are what I really enjoy about the course.

I have also found the staff so passionate about their job. They motivate the whole class and make us all focus on what each of us really like about events.

I was truly debating whether to go on placement or not, but I finally made my decision after we performed our own event for the Events Live! module. That is when I realised what I really enjoyed and that I wanted to make the best of my course.

My placement is at the Grand Hotel in Brighton. Everyone has been fantastic – really supportive, patient and helpful.

I have gained so much since I started my placement that I cannot compare it to anything else. Professionally and personally.

Marcela Oliver

Georgia Byrne

I chose the University of Brighton as when I attended my open day, the introduction to the course sounded great with options of different pathways.

I have enjoyed so many aspects of the course, including guest speakers coming in to talk about their events experience. I also thoroughly enjoyed the chance of organising and putting on an event in my first and second year.

My lecturers have enhanced my knowledge since the start of my degree, and have been very helpful and supportive in tutorials, and with the feedback given from the marking of assessments.

I chose the placement year as I wanted to gain real life experience and to put the theory and skills I had learnt from my first two years at university into everyday practice. Taking a placement year has widened my knowledge, enabled me to gain invaluable experience that I can apply to my final year of study and in the future after graduating and working in the events industry.

Georgia Byrne

Nikkie Mazibeli

I choose to study event management because I was fascinated with the execution of events and what goes on behind it. I read into the course from different universities and I decided to visit each one and find out exactly what the course included. I chose Brighton as it was the only one which offered the chance to specialise and it also felt like they had more of an understanding of event management.

The university teaching staff were there to help with anything I faced and I could count on them to help whenever I was stuck on a project. Tutors who don’t even teach my subject were also keen to give me insight to help me fall in the right direction.

With my course I really liked the Events Live! module – it was a great way for us to take what we had learnt and use it to create a successful charitable event. It was really challenging but I was grateful for practical pieces of work in the course. I also loved the placement option.

A placement allows you to learn, make mistakes and apply what you have learnt within your degree. I also wanted to allow myself to have an advantage when looking for a job after university; to be able to say I have a years’ experience in the working environment gives me more of an advantage than if I have no experience at all.

My placement taught me so much and with my colleagues around me I felt like I had amazing mentors as they were keen to help me understand the working environment and also understand the job better. My role focused on administration management and development of a range of commercial event management services to internal and external clients – to operate successful events to agreed standards and budget. I was given full responsibility and I feel ready and equipped for when I finish my degree.

Nikkie Mazibeli

Camille Obligis

One of the strengths of the course is that it offers a wide range of knowledge that the business environment asks for. I will be able to tell my employers that I know about marketing, the economy, accountability, human resources and of course the events world.

Thanks to the university network, I have had the opportunity to do lots of paid and unpaid work. There is lots of support, so if you have a problem with your computer or bank account or if you feel stressed, the university can help you. Knowing that there are many services to support me has helped me through my whole university experience.

If you are considering studying event management, this university is for you. You will make new friends and have a great time, but will also develop your skills and learn to think outside the box.
