Intro

Studying marketing alongside business management will give you the ability to ensure that marketing strategies are integrated within the broader business context of an organisation.

Aligning marketing initiatives with organisational goals, considering financial implications and analysing market trends means you’ll be able to develop effective marketing plans and make strategic marketing decisions.

Our Business Management with Marketing degree will develop your understanding of the influences that drive business and marketing decisions. Topics you’ll be able to cover include marketing communications, planning and strategy, market research, consumer psychology, and international and cross-cultural marketing.

You’ll also undertake a year’s paid work placement so you can put your skills into practice.

Entry requirements

A-levels or BTEC
Entry requirements are in the range of A-level BBB–BCC (120–104 UCAS Tariff points), or BTEC Extended Diploma DMM–MMM. Our conditional offers typically fall within this range.

International Baccalaureate
26 points, with three subjects at Higher level.

Access to HE Diploma
Pass with 60 credits overall. At least 45 credits at level 3, with 24 credits at merit.

GCSE (minimum grade C or grade 4)
At least English language and maths.

Foundation degree/HND
May enable you to start the course in year 2. Relevant subjects required. HNC may also count towards direct entry.

Studied before or got relevant experience?
A qualification, HE credits or relevant experience may count towards your course at Brighton, and could mean that you do not have to take some elements of the course or can start in year 2 or 3. 

English language requirements

Our Business Management BSc(Hons) with integrated foundation year provides an extra year of study at foundation level if you do not have the academic qualifications or experience needed for entry to this course.

Why choose this course?

In your first year you take core modules shared with our other Business Management degrees. This gives you a broad understanding of business principles.

From your second year you can also choose to specialise in the area of business which interests you most: economics, entrepreneurship, finance, human resource management, law or marketing. This will help you to decide which area of business you would like specialise in, whilst also preparing you to be your own boss.

Year 1

All our Business Management degrees share the same first year core modules, giving you a broad understanding of business principles.

Core modules include aspects of economics, marketing, HR, organisational behaviour and finance, to give you a broad understanding of business principles and practice. You can then choose to specialise from year 2.

  • Business Economics

    In this module you will develop your understanding of key economic concepts by applying them to contemporary issues within the world of business and through the application of quantitative techniques. You will also gain an understanding of how political, economic and environmental factors influence the world of business.

  • Marketing Principles

    This module introduces the role and function of marketing within organisational frameworks. You'll develop an understanding of basic qualitative and quantitative tools available for analysing and interpreting the marketing environment.

  • Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management

    This module will introduce you to a range of concepts, principles and theories that have been adopted within the study of organisational behaviour and human resource management.

    This module will provide you with a grounding for understanding how people are managed and organised in the workplace.

  • Financial Knowledge and Skills for Business

    This module provides you with an introduction to fundamental concepts in the fields of financial accounting, management accounting, and finance. You will develop a basic understanding of an organisation’s financial position and performance through the application of appropriate analytical tools and procedures.

  • Enterprise Project and Skills

    In this module you will create a business plan, a project plan and a marketing plan that include a digital presence.

    You'll integrate and apply skills and learning from other year one modules using project management skills to deliver a practical and applied business project, and will need to demonstrate a clear understanding of market dynamics, financial structures and HRM employment strategies.

    The module is underpinned with a strong skills component which develops quantitative, research, project, academic, team working, personal development and business skills.

  • Managing Systems and Operations

    This module will introduce you to the use of digital technologies and operations management in business.

    The module will highlight how managers use digital technologies to measure and improve operations and systems performance, and will provide an understanding of the processes and the methods to improve them in both service-oriented and manufacturing-sector organisations. A range of contemporary issues, innovation and future trends in Information Systems (IS) and operations management will be showcased

Placement year

The paid work placement year is a vital part of the course. It gives you the chance to apply your learning to real-life situations and challenges, to meet and network with potential employers, and have opportunities to get real work experience before you graduate – something that employers value highly.

On your placement, you will complete a business project. This project contributes to your degree and, depending on the topic you choose, could provide valuable insight for your placement employer.

Placement companies include American Express, BMW, Bosch, Channel 4, Disney, Electronic Arts, Hewlett Packard, Home Office, IBM, Ipsos Mori, ITV, lastminute.com, Microsoft and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

Course leader

Dr Gokhan Aydin

Gokhan is a senior lecturer and course leader on our Business Management with Marketing BSc(Hons) degrees. 

He's taught a range of topics including digital marketing, marketing management, services marketing and brand management for almost a decade. 

Gokhan is actively involved in research, primarily investigating the influence of digitalisation on consumers’ perceptions/behaviour, plus trends and developments in various facets of digital marketing. He's also worked in various marketing, product management and retail management roles in the private sector.

Gokhan is the module leader of the Digital and Social Media Marketing module. In this module students develop their understanding of digital channels and services, planning marketing activities for a brand to be delivered via these channels.

Employers are involved throughout the degree programme to ensure we’re helping you to develop the skills they’re looking for. Businesses work with us on guest lectures, placement opportunities and with live project briefs – where students present solutions to a group of employers.

We also work with organisations to develop the content of our courses. For example, we are working with SAP, the world’s largest business software company. During our second year module, Managing Systems, students gain practical experience working as a team to manage a business scenario by using SAP’s Enterprise Resource Planning system, which is considered industry-standard software.

Fees and costs

Course fees

UK (full-time) 9,250 GBP

International (full-time) 14,300 GBP

If you choose to take the professional placement (sandwich) year offered on this course you will pay a reduced fee during this year. Our fee for the professional placement year is £1,410 for UK students and £2,180 for international students. This fee may be subject to small increases, in line with inflation.

The fees listed here are for the first year of full-time study if you start your course in the academic year 2023–24.

You will pay fees for each year of your course. Some fees may increase each year.

UK undergraduate and some postgraduate fees are regulated by the UK government and increases will not be more than the maximum amount allowed. Course fees that are not regulated may increase each year by up to 5% or RPI (whichever is higher).

If you are studying part-time your fee will usually be calculated based on the number of modules that you take.

What's included

You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees.   • Students who choose to take an optional placement will have travel and living expenses. The cost of this depends on where and how long your placement is.
  • Textbooks are available from the university library (many as e-books) but you may wish to budget up to £200 to buy your own copies.
  • For the International Tourism Management BSc, International Tourism Management with Marketing BSc, International Event Management BSc, and International Event Management with Marketing BSc, field trips are an optional activity, but we do strongly advise participation as they contribute to the overall experience of studying this degree. The cost for field trips is not included in the tuition fee and must be paid for by students, however please be assured we do try to keep field trip costs to a minimum and don't anticipate the total cost of a few field trips each year to exceed £30. If you would struggle to meet this cost, there is a hardship fund that you may be able to access.

Two miles north of Brighton seafront, Moulsecoomb is our largest campus and student village. Moulsecoomb has been transformed by a recent development of our estate. On campus you'll find new Students' Union, events venue, and sports and fitness facilities, alongside the library and student centre.

Over 900 students live here in our halls, Moulsecoomb Place and the new Mithras halls – Brunswick, Goldstone, Hanover, Preston and Regency.

Moulsecoomb has easy access to buses and trains and to all the exciting things happening in our home city.

You can apply for any of our halls, but the options closest to your study location are:

  • Mithras Halls are stylish new high-rises in the heart of the student village at our revitalised Moulsecoomb campus with ensuite rooms for more than 800 students.
  • Varley Park is a popular dedicated halls site, offering a mix of rooms and bathroom options at different prices. It is around two miles from Moulsecoomb campus and four miles from the city centre, and is easy to get to by bus.

Frank Meacey is third-year student. After studying the core economics module in his first year, Frank discovered an interest in financial foreign exchange, leading him to choose the Business Management with Economics pathway. Frank also went on to take a placement at World First Foreign Exchange in Westminster, London, allowing him to explore whether this could be a career choice for him, and to gain some practical transferable skills whilst on placement. Frank was also awarded the Alumni & Friends Award at our 2018 Excellence Awards for his second-year work.
